# Beacon tooltips

Single hints attached to an element. Show them on a pulsing dot, on hover, or on click.

A beacon tooltip explains one element without taking the user through a whole tour: a new button, a setting people miss, a column that needs a word of context.

## Add a tooltip

1. Open the editor on your site: click **Edit** on any tour, or **New Tour**, in the dashboard.
2. In the editor panel, open **Tooltips**.
3. Click the element to attach a tooltip to, then write its title and text.

A tooltip belongs to the page it was created on. A tooltip with no page set (possible through the [API](/docs/reference/rest-api#beacon-tooltips)) shows on every page where its element exists.

## Trigger

| Trigger | The tooltip shows… |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `beacon` (default) | as a pulsing dot next to the element; the user clicks the dot to open it |
| `hover` | when the user hovers the element |
| `click` | when the user clicks the element |

## Delivery

| Delivery | Shown… |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------- |
| `always` (default) | every time |
| `first_time` | until the user has seen it once |
| `session` | once per browser session |

## Drafts

A tooltip that's switched off is a draft: it's saved but visitors don't see it. Tooltips created by a coding agent start as drafts unless the agent is allowed to publish. See [Drafts and publishing](/docs/agents/drafts-and-publishing).
