In-app onboarding checklists that tick themselves off

Show new users the few steps that lead to their first win in your product. Each step completes when they actually do it, and the dashboard shows you which step people stall on.

Three checklists for three kinds of SaaS, shown the way a new user would see them part-way through. Starting points to adapt, not templates to copy.

FAQ

Onboarding checklist FAQ

An onboarding checklist is a short list of tasks shown inside a software product that guides a new user to the point where the product becomes useful to them, such as creating a first project or inviting a teammate. It shows what's done and what's left. In GuideMark, each task can also complete itself when the user does it.

Only the actions that lead to a new user's first real result in your product, usually three to seven. Typical steps are setting up the account, doing the core action once, connecting data or an integration, and inviting a teammate. Leave out anything a user doesn't need to reach that first result.

Each step has one of five completion types: manual (the user ticks it), tour (the step starts a linked tour and completes when that tour ends), page visit (completes when the user reaches a page), custom event (completes when your front end calls ProductTour.complete with the step's event name), or API (completes when your server calls GuideMark's completion endpoint with your project API key).

Building the checklist needs no code. You install GuideMark's script tag once, then write the steps and choose how each completes in the dashboard. Manual, tour and page-visit steps need nothing else. A custom-event step needs one line in your front end, and an API step needs a request from your server.

Yes. Call ProductTour.embedChecklist with a CSS selector and the checklist ID, and GuideMark renders the checklist inside that element. It runs in a Shadow DOM, so your page's styles and the checklist's styles don't leak into each other.

Open the checklist's analytics in the GuideMark dashboard. It shows how many users completed at least one step, how many finished, the completion rate, the average time to finish, the completions for each step and the percentage of users lost between each step and the next.

Yes, once your app tells GuideMark who the user is: call ProductTour.identify(userId) after sign-in, or add data-user-id to the script tag. Progress is then saved against your own user ID and loads on any device, and anything the user ticked off before signing in is carried over. Without that, progress is kept against an anonymous ID in the user's browser, so it survives reloads in that browser but starts again on another device.
